Meet a bridging trainee
Lauren White
What was your first experience of Pilates?
When I was training for ballet at 15 I started taking Pilates classes to build my strength and prevent injuries. Initially I took apparatus classes - it wasn't until many years later that I took mat work classes. But from that first apparatus class I was an immediate fan - the benefits were amazing and I continued classes throughout my ballet training.
What is your matwork and apparatus experience to date?
Before training as a teacher my experience was primarily with apparatus work. While completing the mat work training I realized how beneficial and interesting mat work classes could be. Having completed my matwork training I am teaching 7 regular mat classes each week and covering some classes whilst I complete the bridging course.
What inspired you to train as a teacher?
I knew Pilates had made a huge difference to my body, and I wanted to learn the 'right' way of doing it. It was a shock to learn that there is not necessarily a right or wrong way of doing Pilates - it is all about the purpose of the exercise and one way may not be right for another person.
At first I purely wanted to learn more about Pilates however whilst training I realised how much I enjoyed teaching and helping people learn how to use their bodies.
What do you wish you had known about pilates apparatus before you started training?
The amount of hours and work involved! I had been warned about the many assisting hours in the studio and the time for the case studies however it is not until you are in the middle of it, that you realise just how much time you need to allow for all the various aspects of the course.
Similar to the mat work repertoire apparatus work has endless variations of exercises with new and improved exercises constantly being introduced.
Initially I was disheartened at the thought of never learning it all, however on the positive side this means I will continue to learn and think throughout my career as a Pilates teacher.
